Well it was just a matter of time, wasn't it? After many years of shameful neglect, one of Andover's oldest remaining buildings has been destroyed by fire. It stood for around 500 years.
Anton cottage, a Grade 2 listed 16th-century building of historic interest. Lying within a so-called conservation area has joined the list of the many destroyed local ancient buildings.

Both myself and national heritage organisations have tried for years to get it protected but without success. Our local conservation team have declined to take calls for some time after ensuring that it was a top priority to save and restore it.
Eyewitnesses have stated that there was a strong chemical smell and that the fire crew stood by watching until flames broke through the roof.
It's all very sad and a disgrace but predictable. It could probably be restored but of course, it won't be, and the bulldozers will make way for new buildings as intended.
