CORBETT Joseph smashed a club record 172 not out as Penton ended their season in imperious style with a 141 run win away at Michelmersh and Timsbury.

The opener went one better than longstanding record holder Keith Sutcliffe's 171, hitting five runs in the final over to set the club's new highest run total in a single game.

The massive score helped Penton to a comfortable victory in their final game of the season and ensured an 11th place finish in the Hampshire Cricket League Regional Division One North.

John Hunter and Joseph opened the batting for Penton against the struggling 16th place side.

However Penton got off to a poor start when M&T’s young bowler Tim Loescher took Hunter's wicket in his first over with the score on 7-1.

Corbett’s elder brother Bevon Joseph (82) joined him at the wicket and the two soon began to find boundaries at regular intervals.

M&T rotated bowlers well, but the pair remained dominant until Bevon was caught and bowled by Craig Collins, bringing an end to their 181 run partnership.

Huw Rouse scored a quick 10 and Jack Moodie was bowled for 0 with the score on 207-4.

Bob Wootten joined Corbett at the crease and the scoreboard started rising again.

Corbett took his total up to 167 before Wootten was bowled in the second ball of the final over, with his score on 21.

Incoming Martin Patrick ran a quick bye in the third ball of the final over to give Corbett the chance of beating Penton’s long standing individual score record of 171.

Corbett hit a four to equal the record with two balls remaining, and then hit a single to great applause from all players.

Patrick was bowled out on the last ball of the innings to leave Penton on 306-6.

Relegation threatened Michelmersh fought hard despite their daunting target but lost opener Adie Parsons early on thanks to a catch from Bevon Joseph.

Nick Allen and Joe Pratt put on a partnership of 67, before the former was dismissed by Rouse's quick catch off Hunter's bowling.

Pratt was eventually dismissed for a well made 84 when he was caught by Corbett Joseph off the bowling of Bob Wootten.

Wootten struck again to take the final wicket, with M&T all out for just 165.
