ENGLAND triumphed over the ‘Auld enemy’ last month in the annual Andover Golf Club Scotland versus England Golf Match.

The competition, described as a ‘key date’ in the golf club’s calendar, took place over the Christmas period, with England regaining the cup, which was in the hands of the Scots after their win in 2014.

Played since 1978, the competition is fiercely contested by members of the club, who are divided into the teams based on their national descent.

Prior to the match, both teams paid tribute to Andy Smith, known within the club as ‘Andover’s very own braveheart’, who was unable to play due to illness.

In keeping with tradition, the opposing captains set off in the first four ball, which saw Scotland Captain Tom (Mc) Smith and his playing partner Rhys Betteridge half a keenly contested match with England Captain Bill Groves and Mark Chapman.

Second off was the Scottish pairing of an in-form Roger Smith and Martin Bennett who also drew their match with Mick Batcheler and Harry Dobson.

The wind was soon to be blown from the Scottish bagpipes as Dave Newsum and Lee McGee lost to Jake Ross and Steve Harrop 4&2.

Scotland suffered a further defeat in the fourth with Dave Sneddon and Lenny White going down 4&3 to John Carn and Allan King.

The fifth and final match was again halved with Peter Scott and John Smith who were unable to overcome a resilient Paul Warmington and Roger Stevens, meaning victory was secured for England.

As is in the norm, the players enjoyed some high spirited post match banter, complimented by a fine five course meal.

Tom (Mc)Smith was magnanimous in defeat as he congratulated Bill Groves and his England team in their victory, but was confident that the Scots would be back to reclaim the trophy.

Both captains thanked both the bar staff for laying on a great spread and the members of the club who prepared the course.

Dave Newsum said: “As always it was a great day but losing the trophy to the English is disappointing.

“We will return with fire in our bellies determined to win it back.”
