SAM Pekun bagged a five-goal haul on Saturday as Andover Town thrashed local rivals Andover New Street 9-0 in the Wessex League Cup.

The winger was a constant threat for the away side, scoring a hat-trick in the first half and adding two more in the second to help Town cruise into the third round of the competition.

Town, who sit 26 places above their Wessex League Division One opponents, were firm favourites for the victory prior to the match but the gulf in class was made clear early on when Michael Dixon opened the scoring after seven minutes.

The striker tapped home Alex Dockree's perfectly weighted ball across goal after the midfielder had been played through by Lewis Benson.

Dixon went close again five minutes later when Danilo Cadete beat his man and played in the striker but his effort looped on to the crossbar and out to safety.

Town continued to dominate and were 2-0 up on 20 minutes when Pekun latched on to Gilbert's defence splitting pass and controlled immaculately before slotting round New Street goalkeeper David Tasker.

Dockree scored the pick of the goals seven minutes later when he took down a cross at the back post before delicately curling the ball into the top corner.

It took just a minute for Town to score their fourth of the afternoon when Pekun chased down from the restart, winning the ball just outside of the area before sliding home his second of the match.

A nightmare five minutes was made worse for New Street when Dockree latched on to a through ball by Dixon, leading to a 50-50 challenge between him and the rushing Tasker.

Dockree came out on top and recovered his footing well to slot the ball into the empty net.

Pekun completed his first half hat-trick after 35 minutes following a mix up between Gary Thorne and Tasker.

The New Street defender disastrously attempted to head back to his keeper leaving Pekun with a two yard tap-in to put Town 6-0 up.

Jake Younie completed the first half scoring, smashing home a rebound from his own header after he was left completely unmarked from a Benson corner.

Town reduced the pace of the game after the break with little action for the opening 20 minutes of the second half.

The game was brought back to life on the 65th minute after Gilbert drove 30 yards into the New Street half before playing in Pekun who fired low into the bottom corner for his fourth.

New Street produced there only real chance of note in the dying minutes when the ball was whipped in at the head of an advanced Steve Turner, but his effort bounced wide.

Town broke quickly from the resulting goal kick and Pekun scored his fifth and the final goal of the afternoon, picking up the ball down the right before finishing off a rebound after his original shot was saved by Tasker.

Town return to league action when they play Alresford Town on Tuesday night while New Street will face another tough game away at third placed side United Services Portsmouth on Saturday.
