AN EXHAUSTED Overton United went down to a last second defeat at the hands of Bush Hill in Southampton on Saturday.

Overton were missing a number including goalkeeper Sean O'Brien and defenders Steve Caswell and James McCallion but those who came in to replace them were more than capable and were only denied at the death.

Joint manager Jamie Fewtrell said after: “Today we were just not at the races from the start and Bush Hill seemed to want the ball more.

“Also we were playing against a very strong wind and just could not keep hold of the ball.”

Bush Hill started to play the long ball over the top and tried to hit Overton on the break and their defence were on the back foot but after ten minutes Overton hit back and Luke Neller played the ball over the top for Chris Lavisher to beat the offside trap and chip over the stranded keeper.

After this Bush Hill came back but the visiting back four stayed strong as both Henry Salmon and Kirk Smith in the centre battling hard.

Ten minutes from the break Perry Harding put Bush Hill level and that’s how it stayed into the second half.

After the break it was all Bush Hill and Overton were playing with the wind. Fewtrell added: “We could not play the football we like to play and our neat passing and competitive edge was missing.

"The more we tried to get into the game the more Bush Hill upped the pressure and the game became very scrappy.”

Both teams created chances but the finishing touch in front of goal for both was very poor and as the game neared the end Overton’s lack of energy showed and right in the dying seconds Harding hit them on the break and got the goal they desperately wanted.
