A WHITCHURCH-based sports team are appealing for new members ahead of their first game of 2015.

Roller derby side Basingstoke Bullets are preparing to host their first bout of the year in Andover this weekend as part of a series of matches they hope to put on throughout the year.

Andover Sports Centre will play host to the all-woman side as they take on a mixed team of players from around the area.

However, the team are also focusing their efforts on a New Year recruitment drive.

The Bullets are offering a free “Fresh Meat” taster session to those interested in joining, which includes skating lessons, a chance to meet the team and a glimpse into the fastpaced world of Roller Derby.

The group, who train every week at Testbourne Community School in Whitchurch, were set up by Sarah ‘Dropkick No Mercy’ Byng and Kate ‘Billie Horrorday’ Daniel in 2012 to give woman in the area a fun sport that they could get involved with.

After successfully participating in a roller derby league last season, the group lost several members due to other commitments.

However, the Bullets are hoping that a successful recruitment drive can bounce them back to league status.

Social media secretary, Lucy “Starbuckaroo” Starbuck-Braidley, was keen to express why women in the town should get involved.

She said: “Roller derby is such a fun sport and it’s really different to anything else out there.

“It’s definitely for people who like a bit of a challenge, but anyone can join regardless of skating experience because we have some really good trainers.”

Talking about the make-up of the group she added: “I’m a primary school teacher but there are police officers and students – all different sorts of people.”

“The main thing is they are all really supportive and they will really bring you along in terms of skating.”

“And you also get your own roller derby nickname!”

Those interested in getting involved can watch the Bullets’ first game at 1pm today, with entry costing £5.
