WHITCHURCH Squash Club were away at Lee-On-Solent for the last match of 2014 expecting to maintain their winning streak.

At five, reliable sub Dave Hicks, against a higher ranked player always looked in trouble, but doggedly managed to win one game before going down 3-1.

Al Painter at four had an extraordinary match, winning the first game 9-0 then 9-4 in the second during which his opponent had a dispute with the referee (one of his team). Amazingly he then just left the building mid-match, leaving Al with an unsavoury walkover.

Captain Dave Adamson at three played poorly and made customary hard work of his match but won the decider for a nervous 3-2 win.

At two, Brett Farmer posted another confident win, his sixth this season, with only one loss while at one Alex Melkonian was even more impressive as remarkably he has only one loss in 2014.

The team are now top of the league after seven straight wins, five points clear of Totton who they lost to in the first match.

The annual fancy dress Christmas Doubles, played in sub-arctic conditions, was well attended with final going to Al Painter and Mike Strong narrowly defeating Lee Henderson and Dave Hicks.

The cyclists Brian Nash and Mark Franklin won the third place play-off but the emphasis was on fun and exercise rather than serious squash, so a big thank you went to all the players who supported the event.
