AN ANDOVER lecturer has featured in a national TV campaign which is calling on industry professionals to transfer their skills to further education (FE) teaching.

Dean Carpenter, who teaches construction skills and bricklaying at Andover College, has starred in the campaign alongside Sky Sports pundit Mike Wedderburn, which was broadcast across Transfer Deadline Day, Friday, September 1.

The Ludgershall resident worked in the construction industry for over 35 years before becoming a further education teacher.

He said: “I became a further education teacher as I wanted to transfer, excuse the football pun, my skills to the next generation. I believe it’s so important to train future construction workers with the skills they need and inspire young and old into the profession.

“This is my way to give back to a sector that I have enjoyed working in. As a further education teacher, I have a chance to pass on my knowledge to at least 50 students every year – it is a privilege to have a direct impact on so many lives.”

Created in partnership with Sky Media, the campaign creative is inspired by the Premier League’s transfer window, which sees footballers transferring from club to club. Similarly, the Teach in FE campaign features stories of those who have made the move from industry into FE teaching, delivered in the breaking news format synonymous with Sky Sports News.

Dean continued: “I’m proud to be supporting this campaign and raising awareness for the opportunities the further education sector offers to industry professionals. Becoming a further education teacher is easier than you think, you don’t always need prior teaching qualifications or an academic degree to start. It’s your industry experience, passion and drive for your industry that’s invaluable in further education. So, if you are someone considering if further education teaching is for you, I would just say do it.”

If you have real-life industry skills and experience, you already have what it takes to be a great FE teacher. To find out more about how you could transfer your skills into further education and the next steps to take, visit gov.uk/teach-in-further-education.
