A TOURING exhibition of contemporary weft-faced woven tapestries is set to open its doors at the historic Whitchurch Silk Mill in Hampshire on Saturday, September 9.

Organised by the British Tapestry Group (BTG) Southeast Region, this biennial exhibition named Earth Threads showcases the talent and creativity of its members.

Members from the Southeast Region of BTG were invited to contribute their woven tapestries to Earth Threads, resulting in a vibrant collection that spans all levels of experience in tapestry weaving.

After its run at Whitchurch Silk Mill, the exhibition will continue its journey to the Sunbury Embroidery Gallery in Sunbury-on-Thames.

The chosen theme for Earth Threads is both broad and inspiring: the natural world.

This theme celebrates the visual beauty and variety of our environment while also acknowledging the challenges it faces due to climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Each weaver interprets this theme in their unique way, offering diverse viewpoints and perspectives.

Woven tapestry as a medium offers a wide array of materials and techniques.

From natural materials like silk, nettle, linen, cotton, and wool to recycled or reclaimed items, even paper, wire, fishing line, and lurex—these materials surprise and challenge viewers.

Earth Threads aims to excite and educate both weavers and visitors by showcasing original designs, colours, materials, and techniques.

The resulting tapestries can be both aesthetically beautiful and thought-provoking, conveying the direct beauty of nature or the challenges it faces due to climate change.

The exhibition is a celebration of the rich heritage and traditions of tapestry weaving.
