THIS incredible photo shows one of Britain's greatest-ever aeroplanes, the Lancaster Bomber, flying over Stockbridge.

The legendary plane, which played a vital part in the Battle of Britain during WWII, made a special flypast over the Army Flying Museum in Stockbridge this weekend, as part of the Wheels and Wings event.

Belonging to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, this is one of only two air-worthy Lancasters left in the world.

For the last three years of the war, the Avro Lancaster was the main heavy bomber used by Bomber Command to take the war to the heart-land of Nazi Germany.

It resulted from design work undertaken by Roy Chadwick and his Avro team to overcome the problems experienced with the twin-engined Manchester bomber.

The prototype made its first flight in January 1941.

Despite the fact that 7,377 were built, only two remain airworthy.

What is Wheels and Wings?

The annual fundraising event took place throughout the day, with visitors seeing a wide array of aircraft flying in and out of the airspace above the museum.

Speaking before the event, chief executive of the Museum Lucy Johnson said: "Wallop Wheels and Wings is the Army Flying Museum’s main fundraising event and a chance to showcase some of the best vintage aircraft, cars and motorbikes on the beautiful site of the historic Middle Wallop airfield.

"The museum is an independent charity and relies on fundraising activities to support the work we do in preserving the history of Army aviation, so the proceeds from this event are vitally important and we are hugely grateful to our main sponsors Rolls-Royce Ltd, Waltet and Castle Cameras for their support."

Car enthusiasts were able to see some stunning supercars from the Porsche Club and Ferrari Owner’s Club.

The Austin Healey Club, Aston Martin Owners’ Club and Wessex Area Lotus Club were also present to entertain fans.

A Concours D’Elegance ensured visitors saw a display of the most prestigious vintage cars on show.

Other entertainment included inflatables, craft activities, laser tag and circus skills.

Visitors also had the rare opportunity to see the amazing Apache Helicopter up close at the event from 10am-2pm.
