Travellers have been moved from a field in Andover following proactive work carried out by Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire Constabulary.

Residents noticed caravans had pulled up along Churchill Way West, between Artists Way and Portway Business Park on June 3. Not long after, they moved to a field near Augusta Park.

Residents contacted council leader Phil North, who liaised with the head of legal at Test Valley Borough Council, while also contacting the police.

Cllr North said: "I am aware of the anti-social behaviour and reported criminality that these types of encampments cause, which is why I’ve called this in as soon as possible and will do what I can to expedite matters.

"We’ve done a lot of work in recent years to better protect our open spaces, so I hope they or others don’t try and pitch up in more sensitive residential locations. However, if you’re aware of a large number of caravans moving around the town or trying to gain access to other sites then please let me know."

Police proceeded to conduct checks to identify the perpetrators before confirming they had left the site at Augusta Park on June 4.

Cllr North added: "Whether police used their formal powers or not I don’t know, but I’m grateful that they took action at our request which seems to have resulted in them leaving."

The Gazette has contacted Hampshire Constabulary for comment.
