PLANS to modify the car parking and access road arrangements at Norman Gate Special School in Andover have been submitted.

The project aim is to open the access routes through the car park to enable two-way traffic. To do so, some staff parking bays will need to be moved, re-aligned or reduced in size.

An area of the artificial grass play area with old and decayed furniture is proposed to be converted to staff parking.

The project’s scope is to modify the car parking and access road arrangements at Norman Gate Special School to enable more authorised vehicles to safely access the site to drop off and pick up, rather than parking off-site on Vigo Road.

The mini-bus layby and pavement will be relocated sideways to free up circulation space, and the ‘bus stop’ will be also removed.

Improvements at the school have already started with the straightened and shortened pedestrian safety barrier to remove an existing safety hazard at the school end of the barrier.

A double secure locker will be provided for staff cycles, and one powered two-wheeler space will be marked out.

Pupil cycle parking will not be provided due to “the nature of the school”. However, pupil access routes will be consequently widened and improved to give further safety gains.

Once approved, further works will be carried out as a part of the planning application, including the re-painted all-white line and pedestrian crossing markings, the joining of the pedestrian waiting area and grass verge to take up less space and improve the flow, and improvement of the parent standing waiting area, among others.

Public consultation was carried between April 21 to May 19.
