HAMPSHIRE is braced for thunder and rain this weekend - but the Bank Holiday won't be all bad.

Heavy showers today will be accompanied by temperatures of up to 20 degrees in parts of the county.

Sunday will be milder with temperatures in the high teens, possibly rising in the afternoon.

The Met Office's Graham Madge said: "It will feel for most like a nice weekend, outside those showers. You'll get to see some sunshine."

The mixed forecast hasn't stopped cancer experts from warning families to protect children's skin and eyes from the sun.

Cancer Research is urging young people to avoid excessive tanning as part of the Own Your Tone campaign.

Meanwhile a leading ophthalmologist has urged parents to protect children’s eyes from sunburn as well as their skin.

Steve Schallhorn, chief medical director at Optical Express, said: “Understandably, people want to enjoy the heatwave but it’s vital that mums and dads recognise that it’s not just their children’s skin they need to protect from the sun.

“Just like skin, eyes can be sunburned. Photokeratitis is a painful, temporary loss of vision caused by overexposure to the sun’s rays.”
