AMPORT residents and locals enjoyed classic English fete entertainment on Saturday.

Crowds browsed the stalls, ate candy floss and were treated to Punch and Judy and morris dancing, as well as less traditional additions like a human fruit machine.

Testosterone was on display at the strongman, splat the rat and welly-wanging, with competitive dad syndrome frequently diagnosed at the beat the goalie stall.

Tractor rides took passengers down the Amport House drive, allowing a close-up look at the house and gardens, and pony rides circled the green.

Fete organiser Kate Cavalier said: “Villagers competed for the horticultural and art show titles as well as master baker, which was claimed by Violet Norton with her impressive plate of biscuits.

“The classic car show looked stunning on the south green and Andover fire station’s firemen and their engine had the kids enthralled.”

The arena entertainment included a gun dog display from Mullenscote Dogs, country dancing by the children of Amport Primary School, a village sports day and a hawk flying display from the Hawk Conservancy Trust.

Villagers returned in the evening for a hog roast, dancing and a lively auction, with spirits undampened by the intermittent heavy rain showers.

Kate added: “The fete raised much- needed funds for the church, school and other community projects.”
